Easter Devotion 27

Lord, please put my dark times in perspective. Keep me mindful of all that you left behind in order to bring me forward into new life.

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!

Earth and heaven in chorus say, Alleluia!

Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!

Sing, ye heavens, and earth reply, Alleluia!

-From “Christ The Lord Is Risen Today!”

By Charles Wesley (1739)

When you hear this hymn, does that distinctive “Alleluia!” stick in your head all day long? It’s such a triumphant sound! But did you know that Charles Wesley, one of the greatest hymn writers of all time, didn’t originally include the alleluia in the text to this song? It was added later by a hymnbook editor, along with its rousing tune. Yet it is perfect addition to Wesley’s victorious lyrics.

All throughout life we are to reflect on Christ’s sacrifices, His love for us, and His atoning mercy. Christ the Lord is risen, and now we soar where He has led. So as you celebrate the victorious Christ, see what difference an added alleluia can make in your words and in your thoughts.
